Enjoy a healthy sex life
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explores the relationship between wellbeing and sex – the tenth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel
Reality Check How would you rate the sex education you’ve received? Or the degree of self-awareness about your own body or your comfort level in speaking openly about sex? Young people today reach adolescence in a world plagued with a pandemic of sexually transmitted diseases – some that literally threaten the survival of certain races and nations.
Insight Most of us have been taught by our parents, teachers, ministers and friends to react to sex with fear, embarrassment, confusion and anger. It’s hard to forge a relationship between sex and wellbeing when sex isn’t talked about rationally and in a respectful manner.
Result Because of this confusion our sexual energy gets blocked, leading to a range of problems such as impotence and frigidity, sexually compulsiveness or addiction, dysfunctional relationships, sexual abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and physical, emotional and spiritual pain.
Moving Forward When it comes to sex and intimacy it’s easy to be swayed by the opinions of others and especially the media, so it’s important you assume self responsibility for sex just as you would the other areas of your life – acknowledge you’re the only one who knows yourself best. Embrace yourself as a sexual being – accept sex as part of your wellbeing and use it to enhance your quality of life rather than promote disease, unhappiness, divorce, fear and even death. Also engage the expertise of a wellness and personal coach to help you be more informed, conscientious and deeply aware of how your sexuality directly affects your wellbeing.

Wellbeing & communication
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explores the relationship between wellbeing and communication – the ninth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.
Reality Check Communication involves organising your thoughts and feelings, then transmitting them in the form of a verbal or nonverbal message. Human communication is an exchange of information between a sender and a receiver. But as humans are so complex, it’s virtually impossible for us to communicate isolated bits of data. Each time you speak to someone, you’re revealing something about yourself – your tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures, words and even clothes act as a message about yourself.
Insight The people you communicate with interpret what you share in the form of theory perceptions, beliefs and values. Sometimes there are so many variables and hidden messages the original information ends up getting buried. When you’re not busy communicating with someone, you’re carrying on a running conversation within yourself. Although you might not be aware of it, this self-talk has a deep impact on your self-esteem and subsequently, your wellbeing.
Result These internal conversations are as vulnerable to distortions and misrepresentations as any other conversation. Internal conversations direct the way you view the world and yourself, so they have an impact on your health, happiness and general wellbeing. If you tell yourself you are weak or unworthy enough times, the likely outcome will be just that.
Moving Forward Once you realise how exhausting and sabotaging self-talk can be, you can resolve to change it. With the support of a professional personal coach, set aside time each day to observe and listen to your inner dialogue. Journal your intrapersonal communication and explore why it deeply influences your health and wellbeing. Awareness gives you the ability to take responsibility and action and make a decision to enhance your communication skills and lifestyle.
Self-talk and self-concept are directly connected – when you communicate with yourself, you’re altering or reinforcing your self-concept. A strong, worthy self-concept is in sync with a strong, worthy body and mind. So your wellness depends on your self-concept, which is influenced by your intrapersonal communication.

Wellbeing, work & play
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explores the relationship between wellbeing, work and play – the eighth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.
Reality Check Work and play are essential to a balanced lifestyle, but they aren’t separate entities. What is play to you may be work to another. And while some of us make a chore out of recreation, others don’t even consider their jobs as work – because they enjoy what they do.
Insight Play is frequently considered an antonym of work, solidifying the dichotomy between the two. One reason we don’t play as much as we should is because we’ve adopted society’s definition of it as no more than “fun”. But play is fascinating, peaceful and restful. And when play energy is balanced with work energy it enhances the quality of professional and personal relationships.
Result Because work and play are dynamically connected with self-concept, a sense of purpose and your own survival, they’re strong determinants of your wellbeing. If problems are ongoing in work or play, your state of health and wellness will reflect this. Ultimately, it’s all about perception. Work provides meaning and structure to your life – you earn your livelihood, express your gifts, dreams and creativity and facilitate change in the world. Because of this, work is seen as both necessary and desirable. Play is a form of self-nourishment, it’s an attitude you can create at any point – transforming something monotonous into the exciting, duties into desires. By allowing play to strengthen “you”, you’re more likely to experience balance and live in the now.
Moving Forward It’s impossible to live a full life if you lack the energy to play or can’t grasp the concept of “taking it easy”. Rather than changing what you do for work or play, be more aware of your attitude and with professional coaching, examine the roles work and play have in your life and make changes.
How to balance work & play
Abandon judgments of either activity. Ask, “What do I consider as play?”, “How am I presently balancing work and play?”, “Is play an important priority in my life – and if not, why?”.

Thinking and wellbeing
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explores the link between wellbeing and thinking, the seventh focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.
To be more conscious of your wellbeing requires you to be mindful of your thoughts as they can either be beneficial or detrimental to you.
Reality Check Have you ever examined the many thoughts passing through your mind in a day? Living in a sea of memories and beliefs buffeted by the waves of conflicting thoughts, intentions and impressions from your past shapes your present thoughts, words and deeds, and ultimately your future. If you’re suspicious, you will find suspicious events at every turn. If you’re trusting, you’ll be rewarded equally. Thus, your thoughts become your reality.
Insight While most agree what goes into the mouth affects overall health, few seem to understand what enters the mind affects what comes of it also. Mental nutrition is equally as important as oral nutrition – the images and energies filling your mind affect you physically, influence the people around you and move the world at large.
Result Everyone sees the world through a filter. You don’t really see the world as it is but as you are. So, if you’re looking at life through rose coloured glasses, you’ll see love and trust. But if you look through lenses tinted with doubts, resignation and fear you’ll reflect the same qualities.
Your thoughts also colour your relationships. An envious friend, suspicious wife and parents loosing confidence in their child will find plenty of evidence to reinforce their feeling as long as they think and look for it. Your thoughts also affect your physical health. According to a Biofeedback study your heartbeat can be slowed or quickened in tandem with your thoughts – stressful or relaxing – affecting other physiological functions.
Moving Forward Understand your own mind. The art of thinking uses energy, is dependent upon sensory data and is connected with the emotions mapping your internal version or interpretation of reality. Learn to pause, observe and listen without judgement and identify recurring mental patterns that lead you into depression or anger.
Result Everything around you interacts with your thinking process. Examine the sources of your current thoughts and take responsibility for what you choose to feed your mind.
Q. Why should I be aware of my thoughts?
A. Awareness allows you to realise how many different activities are going through your head, allowing you to filter and differentiate positive and negative thoughts. Until you realise how influential your thoughts are on your reality, you’ll be in an unconscious existence filled with automatic responses.
“Elisabetta’s coaching has facilitated my growth in ways I would have never imagined. She challenged my thinking process, motivating me to persevere during my process of transformation from the inside out.” Ms. S.B. (Entrepreneur & Mom, 41 years old)

Gain emotional wellbeing
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explains the connection between wellbeing and feelings, the sixth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.

From the moment we’re born, we experience emotions. Emotions can be intense and wonderful, but can also be misunderstood and mistreated.
Reality Check Our emotions serve to motivate thought and action. Imagine how boring life would be without them! But as we grow older, we often judge, repress, drug, swallow, worship or turn away from our emotions.
Insight We only feel whole, fully human and alive when life is filled with emotion. From our earliest years, many of us have been conditioned to label some emotions as “good”, while others are “bad”. We’re taught while it’s acceptable to feel happy, expressions such as anger, sadness, frustration and fear can make others uncomfortable. And while some feelings are approved of and can be practiced openly, others should be avoided.
Result Children are aware of four basic emotions – joy, fear, sadness and anger, encompassing the full spectrum of human feelings. Due to poor emotional intelligence, some of us have a dulled awareness of emotions, accepting the notion that some feelings are “bad”. At the same time, we may wonder why our lives aren’t richer, or more satisfying.
Moving Forward There are no “good” or “bad” emotions. Emotions can be categorised, but they are only part of our entire experience. All emotions can be felt and expressed in a healthy manner.
Result Increasing your energy, wellbeing and ability to feel “alive” means becoming aware of your feelings. Start by embracing all kinds of feelings and develop healthy ways of managing and expressing your emotions. The creative tension of joy and sadness any moment may hold can only reenergise and spice up your life, allowing you to achieve great results in your family life and at work!
Q. How is emotional awareness connected to emotional intelligence?
A. Emotional intelligence is your ability to monitor your own and others’ feelings, to distinguish them and use this information to guide your thoughts and actions. Emotional awareness sets the foundation for emotional intelligence. The ability to know and embrace your emotions allows you to achieve true happiness and success.
Q. How can I increase my emotional awareness?
A. Ask yourself “What am I feeling?” throughout the course of each day. This is the first – and simplest step – towards increasing your emotional awareness.

Get moving for wellbeing
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explains the connection between wellbeing and movement, the fifth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.

Everything in us is moving. Our blood flows, lungs expand and contract, heart pumps, eardrums vibrate and eyes roll.
Reality Check Inhibit movement and you create illness. Stop moving and you’re dead! The need for human activity since the Industrial Revolution has changed dramatically. Most of us no longer chop wood and carry water. Our work more likely involves sitting for long hours at a desk or in a car, or standing behind a counter.
Insight The ability to move is the basis for work, play, creative expression, communication and sexual activity. How we start the day can set the tone for how we live the rest of it. A moving body releases stress and pent-up emotions. And time spent exercising is time to relax away from our routine and obligations.
Result Liking what you see is just one of the rewards. Exercise connects us to the way we think and feel about ourselves. Regular exercise firms muscles, sheds pounds and adds a rosy colour to our complexion. A moving body is a body “taking shape”. When you think of yourself in more glowing terms, you feel positive and can approach and light up those around you with confidence. You become less dependent on other people for approval, because you know yourself and you approve of what you know.
Moving Forward A regular exercise programme is a statement of personal power, strength, flexibility and endurance, and confirms personal control. It reinforces that what you do in your body you achieve in your work, your relationships and your dreams.
Result
The whole universe, the sum total of energy, moves as if in a flowing dance. So dancing, exercising and moving freely is a great metaphor for living – for being – in harmony. The person moving is at one with the universe and is fully human, fully alive.
Q. What are the benefits of movement?
A. A regular routine involving aerobic exercise, functional training, Pilates, yoga or pure dancing encourages improved food absorption, increased energy and stamina, restful sleep, reduced nervous tension, improved circulation, a stronger body and positive mood.
Q. Can movement impact our lifestyle?
A. People who exercise consume fewer drugs, coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, sugar and refined carbohydrates than non-exercisers, finding such things to be antagonistic to a healthy lifestyle.

Eat well, be well
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explains the connection between wellbeing and your eating habits, the fourth focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel.

Eating is a pleasurable, social activity which rejuvenates your body with the nutrients required for daily activities and your overall wellbeing.
Reality Check We often consume “empty calories” – “junk” and processed items, saturated fats and added-sugar foods. Combining this dietary confusion with a highly-stressful, yet increasingly deskbound, lifestyle is a highly-lethal mix. Many of us have adopted an imbalanced diet, which adversely affects our wellness – often resulting in weight issues and health dilemmas.
Insight High levels of stress undermine your ability to properly digest and utilise food. And a moderate level of physical exercise is insufficient to burn these extra calories and regulate stress. Many of us use food as emotional insulation – protecting ourselves from hurt – or as a drug, dulling the pain of a meaningless existence, broken marriage, or a pressurised job. And when the motivation to be productive wanes – due to physical exhaustion or emotional setbacks – we commonly experience a sense of guilt and attempt to resolve this by overeating.
Result Food is often used to alleviate physical and emotional pain or boredom, as its consumption releases a brain substance called beta-endorphin. Governed by the pituitary gland, this natural opiate produced by our body temporarily relieves pain and stress – creating a biologically comforting effect, which is a major reason for compulsive eating and poor nutrition
Moving Forward Be more aware. Truly listen to your body and its cravings. A craving may be an indication of a metabolic need, or it could be the result of an addiction – a coping mechanism in the presence of pain or stress.
Q. Can I educate myself to eat well?
A. Absolutely! Read more about it and seek professional help. A personal coach specialised in eating behaviours and wellness can motivate you towards change and guide you through good nutrition, exercise and stress management.
Q. How do I start?
A. Don’t expect to make massive changes overnight. First, understand the root of your present eating habits with the support of an expert. Then, to begin, focus on minor changes. Give yourself four to six weeks to get accustomed to your new habits, which by then will be firmly established as part of your lifestyle. Remember to take your time – you’re addressing habits cultivated over a lifetime. Be gentle, but consistent.

Wellbeing & the 5 senses
ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explains the connection between wellbeing and your five senses, the third focus of the Wellness Inventory Wheel

Your five senses give you the ability to touch, taste, smell, hear and see. These marvellous instruments are the portals to your inner pharmacy and promote the release of natural chemicals to improve your immunity, relieve anxiety, combat depression, normalise digestive function and manage pain.
Reality Check “What’s that smell? Do you hear that noise? Taste this! Look at me! Feel this, isn’t it soft?” We use these phrases without thinking. But we’re only able to enjoy such sensations because of our senses.
A vast amount of vital energy is received from our environment and channelled into our being, by the five physical senses. Your ability to work, experience pleasure, communicate with others and even impact the world, is related to your efficient use of such sensory energy.
Insight We’re constantly surrounded by chemical pollutants and loud sounds, consume unhealthy foods in large quantities and overexpose ourselves to sunlight. Without being aware, we abuse our senses with overstimulation.
We can also withdraw from sensory stimulation. Fear and anxiety can cause us to “freeze up” when being touched. In today’s fast-paced society, a lack of sufficient touch is proving to have far-reaching adverse effects on our emotional development, relationships and health.
Result Sadly, evidence shows many of us have “lost touch with our senses”.
Moving Forward You can only get to know and truly enjoy life through your five senses. Start rediscovering your senses today, become skilled in caring for them and use them creatively!
Q. How can I keep my senses in top condition?
A. Educate yourself. Find ways to appreciate and use your senses creatively. Try your best not to abuse or neglect them.
Q. How can I stimulate my five senses healthily?
A. Balance your senses through both inner and outer experiences using nourishing sounds, sensations, images, tastes and smells. Through this, your inner pharmacy will awaken, keeping you balanced, healthy and happy. Pay attention to your environment. Nourish your body and mind through the exploration of new domains and feed your senses with interesting and inspiring impulses. Observe your environment with fresh eyes. And don’t take your world for granted!

Breathing techniques for wellbeing
Personal and wellbeing coach, trainer and author ELISABETTA FRANZOSO explains the connection between breathing and wellbeing.
The way we breathe is akin to how we live our life. How do you generally describe your approach to living? What’s your usual breathing technique? Do you find yourself gasping for breath when you feel sad or angry?
Reality check Every breath we take reminds us we’re alive. Breathing is the harmonising force which unites and balances our entire system – head, heart and belly. The breathing process is carried out by the automatic nervous system, which means we’re breathing without having to do anything consciously.
Insight The way we breathe tells us a lot about our wellbeing and directly corresponds to our emotions. Negative, stressful, angry or fearful states are usually accompanied by short, irregular, shallow breathing – which is heavy on the chest. Positive, peaceful and relaxed states are accompanied by longer, deeper breaths centred in the belly area.
Result Anxiety, worries, bitterness, pressing deadlines, a fast life or even a sedentary work pace may cause a dramatic change in your breathing. You can deliberately induce a quieter and more relaxed state by consciously changing your breathing pattern and shifting to a deeper “belly breath”. This eases the nervous system and affects your entire physiological response to stress, by calming both the body and mind.
Moving forward Slowing down, attuning your breath and taking a few deep inhalations and exhalations can help release unnecessary distress. By learning and practicing breathing techniques you can release tension, deepen concentration and ease pain – which is why this technique is practiced in childbirth.
Practice your breathing technique anywhere – while waiting for the bus or watching a beautiful sunset. The inhalation and exhalation reminds you to open yourself as fully as possible to your present state – the “now”.
Q. Can breathing techniques ease pain?
A. We normally tense ourselves against pain – whether physical or psychological – and seek relief through distractions or pills. By breathing into your pain and becoming more open to it you’ll find the intensity of the pain is reduced and any tension released.
Q. Can breathing techniques change emotional states and nurture wellbeing?
A. Yes, as holding onto emotions such as fear, grief or anger restricts our breath. By paying attention to your breathing patterns you can remove the conditions blocking the natural flow of your breathing –which may be depriving you of an enriching life.

Wellbeing and self-responsibility
Personal and wellbeing coach, trainer and author ELISABETTA FRANZOSO introduces self-responsibility – the first topic of the Wellness Wheel Inventory by John W. Travis M.D.
In my experience as a wellbeing coach I’ve often encountered people who persistently look “out there” for solutions or quick fixes to their problems, only to later discover the answer was within all along.
Reality Check Attempts to find the appropriate therapy, a listening ear or the ideal book with the magical solutions to all your problems, will only leave you in deep frustration. Looking within and assuming responsibility for what you might discover is the only condition for genuine wellbeing.
Insight As a society, we’re used to allowing others to dictate what’s best for us. We give up our “personal power” to teachers who decide what we must learn and how to learn it, to politicians who decide how to use our money and to medical professionals who assume responsibility for our wellness.
The problem isn’t that we use experts – it’s that we often shift all the responsibility to someone or something other than ourselves, so we won’t have to suffer guilt or shame should we fail.
Result If you’re reluctant to take responsibility for illness or emotional misalignments, you’ve lost touch with your reservoir of knowledge and intuition, physical body signals and emotional responses. The end result is a power-robbed existence – diminishing of personal freedom, weakened self- concept, guilt and shame.
Moving Forward By taking responsibility for a problem, you accept you may not have intentionally engineered your current situation and it could have been caused by external factors, but you’re assuming responsibility for how you choose to respond to the situation. Taking responsibility is a true sign of personal growth and maturity.
Q: What is responsibility?
A: Responsibility is defined as “owning the ability to respond to an event”. Taking charge of your life and wellbeing means taking calculated risks, recognising you have choices and are willing to live with the consequences of those choices.
Q: How can I recognise when I’m practising self-responsibility?
A: Regardless of whatever challenges you might face, if you acknowledge there’s a lesson to be learned you can release the blame and embrace the process of assuming full responsibility. A personal coach is able to facilitate this process allowing you to escape denial, release blame and enter the process of true self-responsibility.
