APB Foundation Signature Art Prize WINNER 2011

The Finder attended a gala ceremony presented by The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation announcing Rodel Tapaya from the Philippines as the winner of the Grand Prize (SGD 45,000) of the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2011, for his winning artwork Baston ni Kabunian, Bilang Pero di Mabilang (Cane of Kabunian, numbered but cannot be counted).

His winning artwork (pictured) employs imagery from Filipino folklore juxtaposed with elements of modern day Philippines, commenting on pre-colonial myths, stories and cultural heritage while also commenting on current issues such as environmental destruction.

Four other artists were also presented awards. Three Jurors’ Choice Awards, each worth SGD 10,000, went to Daniel Crooks from Australia for Static No.12 (seek stillness in movement) Sheba Chhachhi from India for The Water Diviner, and Aida Makoto from Japan for Ash Color Mountains. The People’s Choice Award (worth SGD 10,000) for the most number of public votes received from around the world went to Michael Lee from Singapore for his artwork Second-Hand City.
The 15 shortlisted artworks can be viewed at the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize 2011 Finalists Exhibition from now until 4 March 2012 at the Singapore Art Museum.

Profile

John Gordon is Managing Editor of The Finder and has lived in Singapore since 2008. Being an Aussie, there's no wonder John is a fan of the great outdoor. Swimming, tennis , the odd jog along East Coast keeps him fit for a full-on day of active duty. Having a interest in music since a young age, John studied classical and jazz piano as a lad in Melbourne back in the 70s and went on to try his hand as an 80s male model and piano bar singer. Thankfully... he found his feet and took on academic challenges in the 90s and attended The Victorian College of the Arts, Adelaide College of Performing Arts and Sydney Universitiy leading him to a career in Advertising and Publishing.

Travel, wine & dine, entertainment, both live music and theatre are all on John's TO DO list.  If you have a great find or something to share don't keep it to yourself!
